Navigating the oceans of Change…

Navigating the oceans of change

Change in business is as inevitable as is the ocean –  waves up and down, tides in and out! Yet through our research and experience we find that Change is often delegated out and or treated as a separate project. In today’s fast paced world we believe that Change should be a core capability in any leader’s kit-bag, and that is why we are on a mission to create ‘Change-Able’ leaders, who are confident to navigate their teams through these ever changing waters!

But what do we mean by Change?

Quite simply it is about doing things differently than the way they are done today, arriving at your new destination having been able to confidently ride out the ‘storms’ and the ‘calms’ with your teams, and of course avoiding the icebergs along the way!

Change is constant, it requires navigation, evolvement and movement.

As Leaders it is our job to be aware of our own needs through Change, as well as to lead and support others, and sometimes this requires us to make tweaks and other times it is big leaps! But let’s consider for one moment some of the key attributes it takes to do this well, and to be what we call ‘Change-Able’.

What we have found is that those who do it well, foster the following attributes in their teams on a daily basis…

  • Flexibility and nimbleness to respond with speed
  • A learning mind-set, and favouring movement over perfection
  • Knowing what is needed, and taking action with accountability
  • Empowerment and choice to make decisions
  • Resilience to deal with the ups as well as the downs
  • Focus upon the real performance of today and tomorrow!

We also know that these Leaders work hard to build open and trusted relationships, share clear and compelling visions, invite others along on the journey, whilst creating an appetite for Change that lasts!

They also spot and deal with the undercurrents when things appear calm.

Change success only truly happens when the right action is taken by accountable individuals, working in connected teams, supported by inspired and confident Leaders.

Change leadership is not a black art, but like navigating the ocean, when you don’t always know how it can certainly feel that way – we can all feel like we are treading water at times or even going under!

We are regularly reminded that the only constant is Change (especially so at the moment), so imagine what could be achieved if your business leaders were ready, able and willing to ride the waves – whatever shape, size or duration they were – and were actually confident and excited to set sail?
